Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and anticipate observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it respected the economist's decision to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on recently to approve a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on the case.
The measure will afterward head to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following objections from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of financier-linked messages made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications showed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce Summers to notable global figures.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the general audience, he stated he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend connections with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where he was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
He joined the board of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive the company leader.
