A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before running away.

The reason of the shooting is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, as per the official statement.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the site supervising the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, as per local media.

"The report indicates the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement said.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have have information to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," stated a police chief.
